BAGHDAD http://www.starsauthority.com/authentic-martin-hanzal-stars-jersey/ , March 7 (Xinhua) -- The Iraqi government on Saturday said that the Islamic State (IS) militants destroyed the ancient remains of the Hatra city in south of Iraq's northern province of Nineveh.
A statement by the Tourism and Antiquities Ministry said "the terrorist Daash (IS militant group) has stolen and destroyed the city of Hatra", which dates back to 2,000 years and is located some 110 km southwest of Nineveh's provincial capital city of Mosul.
Hatra is well-known for its high walls full of inscriptions and watchtowers dotted around the fortified city http://www.starsauthority.com/authentic-marc-methot-stars-jersey/ , which includes temples and ruined walls, where Hellenistic and Roman architecture blend, merge with Eastern decorative features.
The ancient city was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987 http://www.starsauthority.com/authentic-kari-lehtonen-stars-jersey/ , the first such site in Iraq.
The ministry statement blamed the international community for delaying the support for Iraq that "encouraged terrorists to commit another crime of stealing and demolishing the remains of the city of Hatra."
"This cowardly act has touched this time a legacy registered on the World Heritage list, and the world and international organizations should face such blatant assault on the human heritage," the ministry said.
For the past decade of unrest following the 2003 U.S.-led war http://www.starsauthority.com/authentic-julius-honka-stars-jersey/ , Hatra has been suffering from inadequate excavations and maintenance and few tourists have ventured into the historic site.
The ministry statement is the second in just two days. In a previous statement, the ministry condemned the destruction of an archeological site of ancient Nimrud city, which is located some 30 km southeast of Mosul.
It said the extremist militant group is defying the will of the world and the feelings of humanity by the new reckless crime when it razed the archeological city of Nimrud and appropriated ancient sites dating back to 13 centuries BC.
Also on Friday http://www.starsauthority.com/authentic-jon-casey-stars-jersey/ , the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) issued a press release denouncing the destruction of Nimrud ancient city, considering the act as a "war crime."
Last week http://www.starsauthority.com/authentic-john-klingberg-stars-jersey/ , the IS group released a video showing a group of militants armed with sledgehammers and jackhammers smashed large statues and unique artifacts from archeological sites and Nineveh provincial museum.
In the chaos following the fall of Baghdad on April 9, 2003, the Iraqi national museum was also ransacked by looters. An estimated 15 http://www.starsauthority.com/authentic-jason-spezza-stars-jersey/ ,000 priceless antiquities were lost and only about half of them have been recovered so far.
Chaos and fragile security during the post-invasion years left many historic sites in the hands of looters who carried out random excavations and stole tens of thousands of antiquities, usually causing irreversible damage.
Earlier, the IS extremists destroyed many old temples http://www.starsauthority.com/authentic-jaromir-jagr-stars-jersey/ , shrines, churches and precious manuscripts in the city of Mosul and many other areas.

ATHENS, March 19 (Xinhua) -- The Greek capital welcomed the beginning of spring and the tourism season with the 6th edition of the Athens Half Marathon on Sunday.
In a record turnout for the annual sports and cultural event, more than 21,000 runners from Greece and all around the world participated in the 20 kilometers course and parallel racing events, including races for people with disabilities.
Amateur runners, ranging in age from children to pensioners, showed up at the starting line in front of the Greek parliament and ran alongside athletes aiming to break their own records. The event aims to promote healthier lifestyles and to celebrate life, according to the Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS) and the Municipality of Athens, the event's co-organizers.
The big winner was Yannis Zervakis, a runner from Crete, crossing the finish line in front of Syntagma square at 1:09:03.
In an event focsed on fun (where time records, medals and trophies are of minor importance compared to other competitive races) the thousands of spectators along the course warmly applauded all participants.
"It is a day of celebration for classic athletics. Bravo! Bravo! Everybody was cheering along the course. For me this is the best race after the classic marathon," Zervakis told Xinhua.
The Greek athlete says he welcomes any event which allows people to run on the streets of a city free of vehicles.
SEGAS and the City of Athens have also been organizing the Athens Marathon for decades on the city's authentic course. It's a race first run 25 centuries ago by messenger Pheidippides who inspired the race.
"It is a celebration which offers Athenians and visitors the opportunity to leave their homes and have fun running... There were many participants in the one kilometer and three kilometers courses for children, and this is very encouraging because we pass on to younger generations the mindset of lifelong exercise," Xenia Argitaki, Vice President of SEGAS and member of the Executive Committee of the Hellenic Olympic Committee, explained.
The Athens Half Marathon is held under the auspices of the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO). Its appeal has already expanded beyond Greece's boundaries, and organizers hope that it will evolve into a significant highlight in the coming years, which will attract more and more foreign visitors.
Giovanni T. from Barcelona was among foreigners who travelled to sunny Athens to join the fun.
"It was tough. It was really hard, but here in Athens the half marathon has a special aspect for us to come here. It is the original marathon, where it all began, so it was a nice day even if it was a tough one," he told Xinhua.
Dimitris Patmanidis, another amateur runner, encourages people, regardless of age or profession, to join them in the next race.
Patmanidis took up running four years ago. Exercise improved his health and mentality in front of obstacles in everyday life.
